DENTAL HYGIENE (CLEANINGS)

At Mountain Springs Advanced Dental in Colorado Springs, we strive to provide thorough, customized solutions for all aspects of your dental health, from cosmetic bonding to veneers to dental implants.

One of the most important aspects of your dental health is routine cleanings.

A professional cleaning fortifies your at-home oral cleaning routine of brushing and flossing and allows us to keep an eye on areas of your mouth that may need special attention. There are various reasons that demonstrate the importance of routine dental cleanings. Receiving cleanings with regularity, at least twice per year, can act as a gum disease treatment and help prevent cavities, stop tooth loss, brighten your smile, freshen your breath, boost your overall health, and save money in the long run.

Regardless of the treatment you receive, you can expect Dr. Patterson and our team to make your comfort and individual preferences priorities while in our care.

Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal (Gum) disease is a chronic, non-curable, infectious and contagious disease that also negatively affects your overall health by increasing your chance of developing cardiovascular disease, Diabetes complications, and pregnancy problems; all things we want to avoid.

When bacteria become trapped underneath the gum line, where brushing and flossing can no longer reach, the gum tissue gets irritated and infected. Your immune system will react with these bacteria making matters worse by compromising the health of your gums and risking the loss of your teeth.

Although Periodontal Disease is non-curable, Periodontal therapy exists. Periodontal Therapy is a therapy that helps stop the progression of the disease through the removal of harmful bacteria and infection, with your comfort as our top priority.

Keep in mind, Periodontal Disease is episodic in nature and may require repeat therapy as needed.

Periodontal Maintenance

When you have successfully completed Periodontal Therapy to treat your gum disease, we want to safeguard the longevity of your teeth, gums, and overall health.

To achieve this, our Periodontal Maintenance Program will help keep your Periodontal Disease under control through bacteria removal above and below the gum line; updating with a comparison of gum measurements over time for changes both positive and negative; and providing counseling and education on your specific home care routine.

So what is the difference between prophylaxis (regular dental cleanings) and a periodontal maintenance appointment?

Periodontal Maintenance is strictly different from a prophy and is utilized for patients who have gone through periodontal treatment.

Prophylaxis removes soft plaque, hard tartar, and stain from above the gum line and only slightly below. A periodontal maintenance appointment focuses efforts on the removal of bacteria that reside further underneath the gumline that contributes to disease.

PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY

What is Preventive Dentistry?

The goal of preventive dentistry is to help all patients achieve optimal oral health to maintain and improve overall health and wellness. This includes a thorough examination from our team of Registered Dental Hygienists and Dr. Patterson, at Mountain Springs Advanced Dental in Colorado Springs, to determine the current condition of your gums and health of your teeth. Utilization of digital x-rays, gum measurements, and complete oral screenings allows our team to provide you with the custom dental care you deserve.

Your dental prophylaxis (dental cleaning) appointment allows your teeth and gums to be cleaned thoroughly and checked for any signs of decay or disease. A customized home care routine, along with regular hygiene appointments, is the best line of defense against gingivitis and periodontal disease. Our hygienists are happy to demonstrate how to use a variety of products customized to your health goals that can be implemented at home to maintain the smile you love.
